Hamerkop is a 3 km long strip of land running from the Rietfontein Ring Road in the Buffelspoort Valley to the top of the Magaliesberg escarpment.
It lies in the Magaliesberg Protected Environment (MPE) zone in the heart of the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage site, and adjacent to the Mountain Club of South Africa (MCSA) owned Grootkloof area.
Hamerkop is situated about 125 km north-west of Johannesburg and 95 km west of Pretoria in the North West Province of South Africa.
The Hamerkop Mountain Trust was established in 1987 to buy and manage the property for its beneficiaries - a group of long standing and dedicated MCSA members - to be able to occupy it at certain times and under certain conditions, and to further the following objectives:

Conserve its environment

Assist in the enforcement of environmental laws applying to it

Provide access for rock climbing and hiking

Grant MCSA members a servitude across the property, camping and picnicking rights in designated areas and the right to climb in the Kloof.
Beneficiaries are allocated occupancy weeks based on their “ownership” of units/shares. However, this is not just a time-share arrangement, Hamerkop is run by its beneficiaries for its beneficiaries through structures set up by its trustees.
Beneficiaries who cannot contribute in some way to its management are encouraged to sell or donate their shares to other MCSA members.
MCSA members have the right to access Hamerkop for day trips, camping and climbing in accordance with the rules set out by the trustees.
